Penfield Free CFL (Compact Fluorescent Light) Bulb Giveaway
Introduction:
Promoting the use of Compact Fluorescent Light (CFL) bulbs over incandescent bulbs is a major part of Penfield’s energy conservation campaign. A single CFL will save about $30 over its lifetimes and pay for itself in less than six months at the current electricity rate for the Penfield area. CFL bulbs will also use 75 percent less electricity and last much longer than an incandescent bulb.
ENERGY STAR is a joint program of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy. According to their Web site, if every American home replaced just one incandescent light bulb with an ENERGY STAR qualified CFL, the energy saved would be enough to light more than 3 million homes for a year and prevent the emission of green house gases equal to over 800,000 cars!
CFL Giveaway:
Using a small portion of the funds Penfield received from the EECBG Formula Grant (Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant Program - American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009), Penfield will be giving away CFLs to town residents to encourage the replacement of incandescent bulbs.
The free CFL is a screw-in replacement for a standard incandescent bulb. Each CFL provides the equivalent brightness level of a 60W incandescent bulb while consuming just 25% or one-quarter the power and energy.
Penfield handed out hundreds of CFL bulbs at the Environmental Day Giveaway on Saturday, April 24. The Town will hold additional events later in the year. Interested residents should submit the online sign-up form below to reserve a CFL bulb. Alternatively, paper sign-up forms will be available at the Town Hall and at the Penfield Library.
Purpose:
CFL technology has experienced many advancements in the recent years. It is now available in many styles, brightness levels, and colors ("color temperature") and is well suited for many applications currently using incandescent bulbs. By giving away a demonstration CFL, the town is encouraging residents to switch from incandescent bulbs to CFL bulbs. Each CFL saves 75% of the energy compared to an equivalent incandescent bulb, which will also save on the utility cost for keeping the lights on.
| Use CFL Savings Calculator to estimate how much you save when switching from an incandescent bulb to an equivalent brightness
CFL bulb. It's easy! Choose the incandescent bulb wattage using the drop down menu. The wattage of an equivalent brightness CFL bulb will be automatically selected. Use the slider to select the number of hours the bulb is ON per day - from 0 to 24 hours. The CFL's Annual Savings will update automatically. The savings is calculated using RG&E's fixed commodity rate of $0.08339 per kWh. Actual savings may vary. |
